We are situated on the corner of Springwell Road and Sunningdale Road Springwell.
Our postal address is St. Mary & St. Peter’s Church, Springwell Road, Sunderland, SR3 4DY.
We have a small shared car park with the project, its access is from Sunningdale Road. There is plenty of street parking around the church site, but we do ask you to be considerate of our neighbours
We have been on this site since 1948 originally in the wooden building which had been taken down from Portland Road Plains Farm and moved here. At the time we were known as The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Humbledon. The site then got its first permanent dual purpose building which was dedicated on 21st July 1951 which is currently better known as our church hall or more correctly known now as the St Mary and St Peter's community project. Our current building which replaced the wooden one came along later and was dedicated on the 17th November 1965.
We became St. Mary & St. Peter’s after a long deliberation about the falling numbers and it was decided to close St Peters Church at Thorney Close. The last service took place at St Peters on 26th November 2000 and the dedication service to celebrate our name change here happened on 24th September 2001. About this time the church hall went through the process of a facelift and started to be run as a separate charity better known now as St. Mary & St. Peter’s Project and was officially opened September 2002.
St Peters old building at Thorney Close is still there and is currently used by CSS (Community Sustainability Services) formally Sunderland Community Furniture Services which is a registered charity helping people and helping to relieve poverty in particular by supplying and renovating furniture and household goods to those in need in the North East.
As part of the group of the Annunciation we work closely alongside with the parishes of St Chad and St Mary, St Thomas and St Oswald's
St. Chad is situated on the Durham Road at Herrington and has access from Durham Road and Charter Drive, with its car park access from the Charter Drive side. St Chad’s parish covers the areas of Farringdon, Gilley Law/Lakeside and East & Middle Herrington. The parish priest at St Chad’s is currently Rev. Jeremy Chad. Contact details are available from there website. www.stchad.co.uk .
St Oswald’s is at Grindon and is part of St Mary, St Thomas & St Oswald’s and is situated on the corner of Gleneagles Road and Gladwyn Road. It is a dual purpose building hosting a lot of community events as St. Oswald’s Communicare Centre. Sunday worship is held at St Thomas’ Pennywell and the Clergy roles are shared between the incumbents at St Chad’s and St Mary & St Peter’s.
St Thomas is at Pennywell and is part of St Mary, St Thomas & St Oswald’s and is situated on Petersfield Road near to the corner of Parkhurst Road. It is much like ourselves a post 2nd world war building. The parish works a lot with the young people of the area and closely supports the Pennywell Youth Project which occupies some of the church’s grounds. St Thomas’s no longer has a full time member of the clergy and is supported from the incumbents from St Chad’s and St Mary & St Peter’s.
